Subject: Seeking Your Expertise: Enhancing Laboratory Data Exchange & Invitation to Join APHL ELR Call on Feb 22nd, 2024
The USCDI+ Laboratory Data Exchange Feedback Requested has been pushed back to March 15th, 2024.
The initial Laboratory Data Exchange use case is currently comprised of a core set of data elements leveraged by HHS during the COVID-19 pandemic to compare aggregate data on laboratory-confirmed cases across sources. Additional data elements have been incorporated to align with USCDI and other USCDI+ use cases.
ONC seeks to broaden the laboratory data exchange use case to capture core data elements leveraged for electronic test ordering and reporting between healthcare providers and public health agencies. Given this, ONC seeks feedback on:
- What additional data elements should be included in this dataset to support these use cases?
- What data elements may be unnecessary outside of the COVID-19 pandemic?
- What additional laboratory data exchange use cases may be valuable to include within the dataset?
Check out the feedback form below, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

Dear Public Health Laboratory Informatics Community,
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) is undertaking significant efforts to expand and refine the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI). USCDI is a standardized set of health data classes and constituent data elements for nationwide, interoperable health information exchange. Currently, ONC and CDC are establishing USCDI+ for public health to address core data and interoperability for public health needs beyond the scope of USCDI. USCDI+ for public health intends to establish a list of data elements that support public health transactions, use cases and related implementation guides for public health authorities across jurisdictions. This initiative seeks to build upon the foundational work laid during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to create a more robust, interoperable, and efficient data exchange ecosystem that can serve a wide array of health needs. ONC is requesting specific feedback on USCDI+ and as we navigate the evolving landscape of health information technology and laboratory data exchange, the value of your collective expertise has never been more evident!
How to Participate
- USCDI Presentation on Open ELR Call - To delve deeper into these topics and foster an engaging discussion, we invite you to join the upcoming APHL ELR call scheduled for Thursday, February 22 from 4:00 – 5:00 PM (EST).
This will be an excellent opportunity for you to ask questions, share your experiences, and learn more about the ongoing efforts around USCDI+ and USCDIv5 from both CDC and ONC. Your participation will undoubtedly contribute to shaping the future of public health informatics in a way that is both meaningful and impactful.
- Please mark your calendars and follow the Zoom link (here).
- We encourage you to prepare any questions or feedback you might have, as your contributions will be invaluable to our collective goal of improving public health through better data exchange.
